Quilt Adventure in Germany

Travel with quilting author, educator and historian Kaye England and Sew Many Places founder Jim West as they take off for this quilting adventure that starts in Switzerland, and continues through Germany & Austria. This 10-day tour takes place from April 21 - 30, 2009.

ITINERARY

Tuesday, April 21st

Today we begin our quilting journey with an afternoon flight from the Washington Dulles International Airport to Zurich, Switzerland. During our flight, dinner will be served onboard the plane. D

Wednesday, April 22nd

This morning, before our plane lands, we will enjoy a light breakfast snack onboard the plane. Upon our arrival at the Zurich Airport, we will collect our luggage, pass through customs and meet our bus driver and tour guide. We will drive into the central part of the city and enjoy a panoramic city tour of Zurich, which includes the city commercial center, the Old Town, Fraumuenster Church with its famous Marc Chagall windows, historical Limmatquai and the University district. There will be time for some brief shopping and lunch before we drive to our first-class hotel, the Renaissance Zurich Hotel. We will unpack and relax before a brief orientation and welcome from quilt celebrity Kaye England, and Sew Many Places founder, Jim West. Our “welcome dinner” will be served at hotel. B, D

Thursday, April 23rd

Following breakfast this morning, we will visit the Textilmuseum St. Gallen, which is the capital of the textile industry in Switzerland. Among other things, they specialize in producing most of the Paris catwalk evening fabrics and laces. There will be time for lunch and then we will visit one of the best Chocolate Factories in all of Switzerland. Later in the day we will return back to our hotel and enjoy dinner. The remainder of the evening is free for you to enjoy at your leisure. B, D

Friday, April 24th

Today is a an opportunity to enjoy the city of Zurich on your own. There are fantastic shopping opportunities and all kinds of wonderful places to visit on your own. If you are interested, we are providing an optional tour to the spectacular mountain village of LUCERNE. (Cost of this full day tour and is 50Euro per person.) Tour includes round-trip bus transportation to and from our hotel, personal escort from Sew Many Places, a panoramic city tour of Lucerne and a special lunch. B

Saturday, April 25th

This morning, following breakfast, we will pack our luggage and leave Switzerland to travel to Germany. Along the way, we will travel north to the charming town of STECKBORN, Switzerland. Here, we will participate in a once in a lifetime quilting event, a private tour of the BERNINA SEWING MACHINE FACTORY. As you may know, Bernina is the only family-owned machine factory left in the business. We will spend the morning together ooing and ahhing over how they make these incredible sewing machines, and having a first hand look at some of the latest ideas they are working on. Lunch is included in the tour. Later in the day, we will arrive in the Bavarian village of RUHPOLDING, where upon our arrival, we will check into our boutique family-owned hotel. Jim will provide a walking tour through the town. Tonight dinner is included and will be served at the hotel. The remainder of the night is at your leisure. B, L, D

Sunday, April 26th

This morning we will drive to the town of PRIEN where we will take a boat ride on Lake Chiemsee and visit the spectacular HERRENCHIEMSEE CASTLE. There will be time to enjoy lunch on your own before we drive back to our hotel. Following dinner, we will have an opportunity to see your special quilting projects during Show & Tell, hosted by Kaye. B, D

Monday, April 27th

This morning, following breakfast, we will enjoy the Sound of Music as we drive to the glorious city of SALZBURG in Austria. Upon our arrival, we will meet our guide who will provide a leisurely walking tour of the city, including some of the famous places where the movie The Sound of Music was filmed. This is also the land of Mozart, so you will have an opportunity to learn more about this famous composer and his life. This will be a full day of sightseeing, shopping and fun. We will return back to our hotel in the evening. B, D

Tuesday, April 28th

Today, following breakfast, we will drive to the famous NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE, which was the model used for Cinderella’s Castle at Disneyland. Upon our arrival at the castle, we will meet our local guide who will provide a leisurely private tour for our group. There will be time for lunch on your own before we return back to Ruhpolding. Our final dinner together will be served at our hotel. B, D

Wednesday, April 29th

Today we check out of our hotel and drive to MUNICH. Along the way, we will stop at the tiny village of OBERAMMERGAU. The legend goes, when the black plague was spreading throughout the country, the people in Oberammergau came together to pray and ask God to spare them from this terrible loss. And they were. For over 400 years, to honor God, the residents in this tiny village have performed a Passion Play every ten years, which has now become a world wide event. We will visit this charming village, where you will have an opportunity to see the special hand painted murals on the buildings, enjoy all kinds of shopping, including the unique woodcarver shops, and visit the famous playhouse at your leisure. We will leave Oberammergau in the early afternoon, where we will drive to Munich. Upon our arrival into the city, we will meet a local guide who will provide for us a Panoramic Tour of the city. Following the tour, we will check into our first-class hotel, located in the central part of the city. The remainder of the night is free for you to enjoy on your own. B

Thursday, April 30th

This morning, following an early breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and drive to the Munich Airport for our flight back to Washington D.C. Lunch will be served onboard the plane before our arrival. B, L
